What the research actually shows

The pheromone is the same molecule in the diffuser, the collar and the spray, and it is the most studied non-drug calming option there is for dogs. Around twenty trials have been published and about thirteen of those were placebo-controlled, which is the part that matters: a calming study without a placebo group tends to look positive whether the product works or not. For comparison, alpha-casozepine, the milk protein behind most natural calming tablets, has three published papers, two of them funded by the maker. Valerian and chamomile have less than that.

Where the results are strongest

Puppies settling into a new home. Every treated puppy in a trial of 32 settled within three nights, while most of the placebo group were still disturbed two weeks in. Gaultier and others, Veterinary Record, 2008.
Barking in kennels. Shelter dogs barked less often and less loudly than the placebo group. Tod, Brander and Waran, Applied Animal Behaviour Science, 2005.
Storm and firework noise. A collar reduced fear responses to recorded storm noise against placebo. Landsberg and others, Veterinary Record, 2015.
Puppy classes. Treated puppies were less fearful, socialised better and learned faster. Denenberg and Landsberg, 2008.

Where it is weaker, and we would rather tell you

Separation anxiety. A controlled trial found a diffuser made no measurable difference to barking, scratching or stress hormones in dogs left alone. If that is your dog's problem, this on its own is unlikely to fix it.
Car travel. No good evidence either way, which is not the same as no effect, but we are not going to pretend otherwise.

What that means for your money: a real, measured effect in the situations above, and not a cure. Expect the edge taken off rather than a different dog. That is worth knowing before you spend, which is why it is on the page.

Older dogs

Some owners of older dogs use it for the restlessness and the broken nights that can come with cognitive decline. It has not been studied for that. The maker's position is that it may ease the stress and the disrupted sleep-wake cycle rather than the decline itself, and a good many vets consider it a reasonable low-risk thing to try. Treat it as something to run alongside your vet's advice rather than in place of it.

Where to put it

Low down, in the room your dog sleeps or settles in, and out in the open. Behind a sofa or under a shelf is wasted: the vapour needs to move around the room. Leave it plugged in and switched on continuously rather than turning it off during the day, because the level in the room is what does the work.

What it will and will not do

At its best it takes the edge off, so a dog who would have paced settles instead. It will not make a terrified dog calm, and it does not work on every dog. Give it a fortnight before you judge it.

What to pair it with

Calm is easier to reach when a dog has something to do with their mouth. A chew, a lick mat or a stuffed toy at the point things get loud does more than either on its own, and costs nothing to try.

When to talk to your vet

A pheromone is a reassurance signal, not a treatment. If your dog is panicking rather than worrying, hurting themselves, or getting worse year on year, that is a conversation with your vet and not a product on a shelf. Plenty of them will suggest using something like this alongside what they prescribe.
