The Findings: 66 puppies adopted from pet shops wore either an Adaptil collar (32) or a placebo collar (34). Every treated puppy had settled within 3 days. About two-thirds of the placebo puppies were still disturbing their owners at two weeks, or settled only once allowed into the owner's bedroom or given another dog for company.

The Findings: Recently adopted purebred puppies were given either the pheromone or a placebo for their first nights home, with owners blinded. Gundog puppies on the pheromone cried for a median of 3 nights, against 9 nights for gundog puppies on placebo.

Thunder & Noise ReliefDog-Appeasing Pheromone Collars Reduce Sound-Induced Fear and Anxiety in Beagle Dogs: A Placebo-Controlled Study
The Findings: 24 beagles heard a recorded thunderstorm while wearing either an Adaptil collar or a placebo collar, 12 per group. During the storm, active fear signs rose almost twice as much in the placebo dogs. Afterwards the placebo dogs' scores kept climbing while the collar dogs' scores fell, and more of the collar dogs took themselves off to a hiding spot.

The Findings: In a public shelter, 37 adult dogs had the pheromone diffused around them for 7 days while 17 dogs acted as controls. Average barking volume and how often the dogs barked both fell significantly. When a friendly stranger approached, the treated dogs rested more and sniffed more.

Hospital StayDiffuser Against an Empty Diffuser in a Vet Hospital
The Findings: 43 dogs staying more than four days in a veterinary hospital were housed with either an Adaptil diffuser (24 dogs) or an empty placebo diffuser (19 dogs), and the staff caring for them did not know which was which. The diffuser group showed significantly less excessive licking, less pacing and fewer toileting accidents than the placebo group.
