Football Dog Chew Toy and Treat Dispenser

A dog who empties the bowl in nine seconds flat has not had a meal, they have had an event. This slows the whole thing down and makes them think about it.

It is a hollow rubber football with an opening at one end. Pack it with kibble, wet food or a little peanut butter, and your dog has to work at it to get anything out. Freeze it packed and a fast eater is busy for the best part of an hour.

3 x 3 x 4.3 inches, for medium and large dogs. Dishwasher safe, which matters.

Description

What it does. Two jobs. It slows a dog who inhales dinner, and it gives a bored dog something to solve — a dog working at a stuffed toy is not working at your skirting board.

What it is. A hollow rubber football, 3 x 3 x 4.3 inches, with an opening at one end. Made in the USA, and dishwasher safe — which you appreciate the first time you fill it with something sticky.

How to load it. Kibble alone falls out fast and suits a beginner. Wet food or peanut butter takes far longer. Freeze it loaded and it takes longer still — the version to reach for before you leave the house.

Check the peanut butter first. Xylitol, sometimes listed as birch sugar, is in some peanut butters and is seriously toxic to dogs. Read the jar first.

Which dogs. Medium and large breeds; too big for a small dog to get much out of.

Durability, honestly. Tough rubber that takes ordinary chewing, but no toy is indestructible and this one is not sold as one. Check it regularly, bin it once pieces come away, and stay in the room while your dog works at it.

It's great to be able to support a local company here in Huntsville — and the dogs go mad for everything.

I've been using the sun-cured kelp on my dog's food and I can already see a difference in her coat.
