The supplemented dogs rebuilt 38% less plaque and 20% less tartar, showed 46% lower levels of the volatile sulfur compounds behind bad breath by day 90, and had markedly less gum bleeding. A 2023 review concluded the algae works best as a powder, ahead of dental bites and dry food. Two honest caveats. The evidence is preventive rather than curative: it slows deposits coming back, and there is no good evidence it lifts tartar a dog already has. And the canine trials so far were funded by the maker of the commercial ingredient and share a lead author. They are well designed, but independent replication would make the case stronger. The scoop holds a teaspoon. Kelp is potent and more is not better — stay with the amount on the jar. The best moment to start is the week after a dental cleaning, when there is nothing on the teeth yet. At the amount on the jar a healthy dog sits well inside the safe range. But the trials deliberately excluded dogs with existing thyroid problems, so there is no safety data for them — if your dog has any thyroid history or takes thyroid medication, talk to your vet before you start.
